If you’re looking for a short approach, some yo-yo’ing, or playful terrain – West Nile is the place for you. Just be aware that these are slide paths and there is a lot of exposure from overhead.
Park at the Mosquito Creek Hostel, approximately 25km up the Icefields Parkway from the Hwy 1 turn-off. From the south end of the parking area, head west along an opening/old road. Once it opens up, you’ll see the slide paths to the south-west. From the opening, continue heading west up to the trees, then head left into the trees. Keep working your way southwest through the trees. A river crossing is necessary but usually isn’t an issue from late December on. Once at the base of the slide paths, set a skin track up through the somewhat dense trees to either side of the slide paths. Enjoy the skiing and head back the same way.
Note: These are big slide paths. Be aware of the overhead danger. These slopes should be avoided if you suspect solar heating/wind loading is a factor.
